Le Mouching’s Valentine’s Day Post: Carp On The Fly Everywhere (Just Not In Ontario!)

Le Mouching’s Valentine’s Day Post: Carp On The Fly Everywhere (Just Not In Ontario!)
When people talk about winter carp on the fly fishing, they can’t possibly be thinking of Ontario. I don’t see anyone out on the water these days at minus 20 degrees Celsius targeting carp. The New Fly Fisher e-mag (check it out, it’s free!) just ran a story about pre-spawn carp fishing around the Bay of Quinté. It’s an okay read though it seems they run this story every couple of years. However, their tips are solid, and fishing in the GTA in mid-May looks very similar. More interesting and inspirational, however, is Le Mouching‘s Valentine’s Day post...

A Smith Creek Rod Clip: This Crucial Piece Of Equipment May Be Missing From Your Outfit

A Smith Creek Rod Clip: This Crucial Piece Of Equipment May Be Missing From Your Outfit
Contrary to what some of the cooler fly fishing websites tell us, one doesn’t need “made-by-hipster” rods, head cams and full sleeve tattoos to go “Carp On The Fly” fishing. Basically, use whatever 7 or 8-weight outfit you find in your basement. Add waders and polarized glasses, read either Kirk Deeter’s or Barry Reynolds’ book and you are good to go. Yesterday, however, I discovered that one crucial piece of equipment had been missing from my outfit for years: a Smith Creek rod clip. With your rod securely and firmly attached to your chest pack or vest,...

Podcasts, Videos, E-Magazines: 2013 Has Been A Good Year For “Carp On The Fly” Online Content
Last week temperatures in Toronto dropped to minus 40 degrees Celsius and Lake Ontario froze over. At about the same time I found some really nice “Carp on the Fly” videos online that made me miss summer. I’ll probably have to wait until mid May to again fish for carp in my favorite Great Lakes bays, so the best thing I can do right now is scan the internet for content like this. Comment here or shoot me an email if you find more good stuff! Podcasts: Kirk Deeter shares his top ten tips for carp, and Dan Frasier adds some advice. Earlier in 2013, CarpPro magazine started the FlyCast...

1997 erschien bereits Barry Reynolds’ genialer Klassiker “Carp on the Fly”.

Crayfish Flies For Great Lakes Carp: What I Found Online (And What I Was Looking For)

Crayfish Flies For Great Lakes Carp: What I Found Online (And What I Was Looking For)
You’d think that the shores of top carp waters such as Lake Ontario would be jam packed with fly anglers, given all the media coverage fly fishing for carp has been receiving in the past years. Yet I hardly ever run into anyone else casting their flies at carp. The only person I meet on a regular basis when wading the shallow bays of Lake Ontario near Toronto is Gildo, who, admittedly, is out there way more often than I am and who knows a thousand times more about carp behavior than I do. Gildo is also responsible for getting me my very first carp on the fly. Only an hour or so after he...

128 Pages! Online Magazine Launches Special “Carp On The Fly” Issue
For the past three years I have been fly fishing for carp, and I still think it’s a super exciting way to catch fish. This is particularly true when you live close to the Great Lakes where a lot of carp grow into the 30+ pound monster category. Every now and then I’ve written about this relatively new, yet fast growing branch of the sport. The posts aren’t so much about my own fishing experiences, but about linking to others’ great content that helps us understand how carp tick. (For the European readers, here is a post in German.) Now however something new is online: CarpPro...

Fly Fishing In Ontario: New YouTube Channel Shows Province’s Top Spots

Fly Fishing In Ontario: New YouTube Channel Shows Province’s Top Spots
Earlier this year The New Fly Fisher, one of Canada’s best fly fishing TV programs, launched a new YouTube channel designated to fishing hot spots in Ontario. In cooperation with the Go Fish In Ontario marketing initiative, Bill Spicer and other show hosts travel the province fishing for bass, trout, Atlantic salmon, pike and more. All that’s missing, for my liking, is some Southern Ontario carp fishing. However, with the growing popularity of that sport, I am sure they’ll add a show soon. For now, that leaves more carp for me! Winter is coming, and it’s the best time of the...

Board Gaming And Fly Fishing (Sort Of) Meet In This Kickstarter Project

Board Gaming And Fly Fishing (Sort Of) Meet In This Kickstarter Project
Read a bestselling novel about salmon fishing in the Yemen. Saw the movie with Ewan McGregor. Went on fishing trips to BC and the east coast. And, just yesterday, came across a board game about a salmon river! Naturally, I was intrigued by “Salmon Run” when I stumbled upon that project on Kickstarter, the crowd funding website that has become so popular with aspiring game designers. If nothing else, “Salmon Run” combines two of my favorite hobbies: fly fishing and board gaming. “Salmon Run” is a board game, designed by Jesse Catron (here is his campaign video),...

Fishing Lodges in Newfoundland & Labrador: Extensive Video Collection Now Available Online
If you are planning to visit the Canadian east coast to go brook trout or Atlantic salmon fishing, you may now be better equipped than ever when it comes to deciding which lodge to pick. The New Fly Fisher, an iconic Canadian TV show, has recently visited over ten lodges in Newfoundland and Labrador and dedicated an episode to each lodge. The professionally edited and narrated videos are now available online. You can watch the shows on The New Fly Fisher‘s YouTube channel. To my knowledge this is the most extensive video database about fishing lodges in any region of the world. Kudos to The...

Fliegenfischen im TV: The New Fly Fisher Besucht Mayflower Outfitters auf Neufundland

Fliegenfischen im TV: The New Fly Fisher Besucht Mayflower Outfitters auf Neufundland

Winter In Ontario: Fly Fishing Videos That Will Take You Somewhere Warm

Winter In Ontario: Fly Fishing Videos That Will Take You Somewhere Warm
Traditionally the first day of winter steelhead fishing feels cold. So I wasn’t that surprised when I was shivering for most of the two hours I spent wading the Humber River this Saturday. Not getting any bites doesn’t help keep you warm either. Although I am looking forward to getting some more winter steelheading done between now and April, it would be nice to snowbird and spend the winter months fishing in warmer areas. Check out these five guys in the fantastic films below. Enjoy a 32-minute winter get-away with videos from Australia, the Christmas Islands, the Seychelles, Louisiana and...

Great Videos: Fly Fishing For Carp When The Weather Was Much Better

Great Videos: Fly Fishing For Carp When The Weather Was Much Better
Again, it’s that time of the year: you wake up one day just to realize that the weather has been pretty chilly for most of the week and that it is already mid-November. The warm days are gone and will only be back in half a year. In November, I usually sit in front of the computer regretting not having done enough fly fishing during the warmer months. My second regret (specific to 2011) is that I didn’t really shoot any great fishing videos, although my goal for this summer was to have mastered my camera and editing software. So there is my first goal for 2012. In 2011, I only put together...

Online Fly Fishing Mags: What Is Out There? Part I

Online Fly Fishing Mags: What Is Out There? Part I
Online fly fishing magazines have been around for a while now, and I think it’s time to have a look at what is out there. This is Fly, Catch Magazine and Ten & Two Magazine are three web publications that feature superb fly fishing photography, film making and story telling. Although it gets increasingly difficult for online and print magazines to find new destinations and truly innovative techniques, these three publications do a great job challenging fly mag conventions when it comes to image quality and overall look and feel. I have mentioned this before: This is Fly is my favorite online...

The Anthropologist: How A Trendy Women’s Retailer Is Inspired By A Fly Tier
Anthropologie retail stores have an interesting brand communication tool in place: The Anthropologist website, an “online space for inspiring works and inspiring individuals.” This site has no obvious connection to the retailer and there are no items for purchase. Each month the site features one or more individuals “who move us in order to move you.” Furthermore, the website champions “the idea that sharing sources of creativity in turn kindles it.” In 2010 the Anthropologist showcased craft metalworkers using century old techniques, motion studies of ballerinas and...

The Sleekest Online Magazine: This is Fly

The Sleekest Online Magazine: This is Fly
Fly fishing is online. There are a bunch of “where, when and how” forums, a few interesting blogs and at least two regular podcasts. But how many good online magazines are out there? I would think there is one: This is Fly. By mixing fly fishing topics with ecology, lifestyle, arts and music, the cool and sleek magazine stretches the boundaries of conventional fly fishing publications. Every cover is designed by an artist who is featured with a substantial portfolio in the magazine as well. Every issue also contains a playlist of songs to listen to while reading through the pages of This is...

North America Updates in Fliegenfischen Fly Fishing Magazine

North America Updates in Fliegenfischen Fly Fishing Magazine
The current issue of Fliegenfischen magazine – at newsstands since June 11, 2010 – features two of my articles about North America. One piece reviews fishing for tiger trout in Manitoba and another reports on the Atlantic Salmon Federation’s efforts to promote catch and release fishing. These two articles mark my start as North American “correspondent” for the magazine. In every issue, I will be contributing stories, reviews, reports and news updates from the U.S. and Canadian fly fishing scene. Now even more than ever, I am looking for potential stories and developments in...
